As one of the ‘big six’ energy suppliers in the UK, British Gas supplies energy to around 11 million homes. It offers a huge range of additional services to its customers, from central heating care to emergency boiler repair.
Despite offering lots of different deals – like free electricity on your choice of a Saturday or Sunday – there isn’t much difference in price between the many different plans British Gas offers.
British Gas hasn’t been averse to bad publicity, either. In Summer 2017 the company announced a massive 12.5% hike in electricity bills, despite saying previously it would freeze prices. In the past year British Gas have been investigated and, in some cases, fined by the energy regulator Ofgem for a whole range of failings: from not meeting minimum standards for businesses to not switching customers within the required 21 days, and mishandling customer complaints.
As of Summer 2017, British Gas's best-price tariffs are:
Cheapest standard tariff
Cheapest fixed tariff
In 2017 British Gas's Standard Variable Tariff price hiked by £76.
